In “We Are Marshall,” Matthew McConaughey stars as a coach who revives a university’s football team after a majority of people involved in the football program die in a plane crash.
The shoe: Stella McCartney green satin, jeweled pumps
The chant is a strong one and you can’t help but finish the phrase along with the football players in the movie. The coach yells, “We are!” and the team replies in sound unison, “Marshall!”
Coach Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey) becomes the coach of Marshall University’s football team after a plane crash kills many of the players, coaches, fans and boosters. Lengyel’s peculiar yet positive personality is the key to creating a line of trust between the players and the university’s administration. He gains respect from both parties and earns the reputation as a quirky coach but a coach who has the ability to restore hope in the program, nonetheless.
Coach Lengyel and Stella McCartney actually have a lot in common. Both entered their respective positions with low expectations. Since McCartney is one of the daughters of former Beatles member Paul McCartney, the fashion world wasn’t too confident in McCartney’s designing abilities because it was assumed that only her lineage would bring her fame. But McCartney proved the industry wrong. Her creations, combined with her signature style of not using fur or other animal products, took on a life of their own and launched the young designer to success.
McCartney’s green, satin pump is a mixture of the Marshall football team and coach Lengyel: it’s classic with a twist. The close-toed pump is transformed by adding a jewel tone and feminine but tough studs. McCartney’s style is one associated with her name all on her own, but it took her a while to climb the ladder. Coach Lengyel also had to do some adjusting. He had to mix his coaching style with Marshall’s atmosphere. His ideas were forward-thinking (petitioning the NCAA to allow freshmen to play right away), but he also maintained the good ole football values of hard work and determination.
I’m sure Marshall fans would wear McCartney’s green heels proudly, representing their team and the courage it took for the program to pave its own way, just like McCartney did.
